CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield County Conservation District has announced that five students from across Clearfield County have been awarded scholarships to further their education in fields related to conservation, forestry or agriculture. Funding is made possible each year through the W.G. “Turk” Jones Memorial Fund and the Claude Schickling Foundation.
The W.G. “Turk” Jones Memorial Trust was established in 1982 in memory of Conservation District Director W.G. “Turk” Jones.
Jones was often referred to as a modern day “Johnny Apple Seed” because he devoted much of his life to planting trees on strip-mined lands. He won state and national recognition as well as the gratitude of his fellow citizens for his conservation practices and leadership. Donations from area individuals and businesses have made this scholarship possible.
The Claude Schickling Foundation was started in 1999 in honor of Claude Schickling.
Schickling was the driving force in forming the Clearfield County Conservation District in 1963 where he served as an associate director. Schickling was also the former owner of the Pine Grove Nursery, which still provides some of the stock for the Conservation District’s annual tree sale.
Congratulations to each of the scholarship winners as they are as follows:
Scholarship applications are accepted each year beginning in February and are typically awarded in March.
