Cleburne County Community Foundation, an affiliate of Arkansas Community Foundation, awarded almost $28,000 in Giving Tree grants for nonprofits in Cleburne County. These grant awards were presented on April 10 at Breakin’ Bread Community Kitchen in Heber Springs.
“I am thankful for the legacy of those who have set up endowments that will forever impact Cleburne County,” said Susan Vowels, executive director of the Cleburne County affiliate. Since 2004, we have awarded over $750,000 in grants to local nonprofits. This year we had three areas of focus: early literacy, food security and childhood obesity.”
“The Giving Tree grantmaking program represents our commitment to and the importance of how local dollars, decided by local decisions can meet local needs,” said Heather Larkin, president and CEO of the Community Foundation. “Funding for these grants comes from individuals and families within our affiliate areas who want to improve their community. The Giving Tree endowments provide a permanent source of funding for local charitable causes.”
One of the local food security grants went to Breakin’ Bread Community Kitchen for a large walk-in freezer. They currently rent freezer space outside of the county for some of their frozen foods. This capacity grant would allow them to save the cost of the storage and allow them to keep more refrigerated foods at their location.
Another food security grant that was awarded went to the NLC Outreach. This grant will allow 90-100 children to be fed through the summer. By the end of the nine weeks, this program will have supplied 11,340 meals to local children.
Other grant recipients include:
Hands on Heber-Food Security.
The Storehouse-Food Security.
Heber Springs Elementary-Early Literacy.
Westside Greers Ferry Elementary- Early Literacy.
City of Greers Ferry-Childhood Obesity.
Westside Greers Ferry School District-Childhood Obesity.
Heber Springs High School-HS Children at Risk.
Heber Springs Humane Society-Heartworm Prevention.
Cleburne County Aging Program.
Margie’s Haven House.
Prim Fire and EMS.
The Otherside.
Cleburne County Community Foundation held its Giving Tree grant banquet at the Breakin’ Bread on April 10 at 6 p.m. Breakin’ Bread volunteered to cook a typical meal that would be served at their facilities, while Community Foundation provided the desserts. Grantees were presented checks by local board members and shared how their organizations were going to administer the funds.
Executive Director Susan Vowels presented the Jim & Jean Stanford Christian Health Scholarships. This year’s recipients included: JP Bonkoski of Heber Springs High School, Briley Smith of Quitman High School & Kylie Stewart of Heber Springs High School. The recipient of David Burnley Memorial Scholarship, which is for a Concord High School senior was Lily Tharp.
Cleburne County Community Foundation makes grants through the Giving Tree program annually. The next grant cycle will begin in January 2026.
