Cleveland American Heart Association hands out scholarships to girls in STEM – Cleveland 19 News
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Saturday is International Day of the Girl, celebrating achievements around the world. The American Heart Association (AHA) helping local girls in STEM succeed with money towards college.
The “STEM Goes Red Scholarship” hands out $5 thousand dollars each to 12 girls.
The scholarships are part of AHA’s commitment to break down barriers for future female stem leaders. The organization along with the support of the Sam J. Frankino Foundation’s awarded more than 45 scholarships since 2019. 
Angela Mills-Gilson is an East Tech junior and just one of the northeast ohio students taking advantage of the program. She wrote an essay describing an interest in a STEM career. She wants to be a plant scientist.
“I love science. I want to get into math. I love learning, so i think it’s going to help me learn more,” she said.
“We know that women are underrepresented and under funded in careers in STEM and research and we really want to change that,” said executive director at the AHA, Shelly Webber. “It’s about building confidence knowing someone believes in them that they would invest in their college journey.“
Students have until December 15 to submit their application. 
Recipients will be announced.
