Thursday was Decision Day across Mesa County, signaling a time for students in the county to solidify what they want to do after high school.
To celebrate Decision Day, Colorado Mesa University leaders visited local high schools — and presented each with a check to go toward scholarships.
CMU awarded a total of $10.7 million in scholarships Thursday. Of that total:
$4.01 million went to Fruita Monument High School;
$3.07 million went to Grand Junction High School;
$2.29 million went to Palisade High School;
$951,016 went to Central High School;
$401,672 went to Caprock Academy.
CMU President John Marshall visited Palisade and Central to present their checks. CMU Vice President Roberto Montoya then visited Grand Junction and Fruita for the same purpose.
The Daily Sentinel attended the check presentation at Central High School, where Marshall was joined by some Central students, the Rowdy Brass Band, the Mesa OutLoud a cappella group and Rowdy the Maverick.
“We’re here to help you, support you and encourage you in your next step,” Marshall told Central students. “For some of you, you’ve got a plan. If you don’t, what we want to do is come alongside you and help support you as you figure out what are your dreams, what are you going to do to help grow and try to improve this community and do something for your family.”
Marshall made three promises to students: an opportunity for a better life through education, a “radically affordable” college experience and that the school would teach students “how to think, not what to think.”
“You may not know this just yet, but our community needs you. We need your leadership,” Marshall said. “Our future is way too complex for you guys to sit on the sidelines. You’re smart, you’re talented, you’re capable. We need you, Warriors. CMU is where Warriors become Mavericks.”
Decision Day is an initiative by the Colorado Department of Higher Education to emphasize the importance of post-secondary education.
