The Coastside Women’s Club awarded scholarships to 10 graduating Half Moon Bay High School students at the end of this year. A total of $60,000 will be distributed equally among the students. Thanks to successful fundraising efforts, this amount is an increase of $10,000 from last year.
Since 1986, the Coastside Women’s Club has given scholarships to graduating Half Moon Bay High School seniors who display leadership qualities, community involvement, a grade point average higher than 3.4 and who demonstrate financial need.
The seniors apply to a local scholarship fund using a single application that is considered by several local businesses and entities across Half Moon Bay, including the Coastside Women’s Club.
A committee of Coastside Women’s Club members reviews the applications given to them by the high school counselors. Typically, 15-20 students pass the initial screening process. From there, the committee visits the high school to interview 10 students chosen by the club members based on their applications.
This year, the 10 high school graduates awarded the $6,000 stipend will attend schools nationwide, including California State University, Long Beach, Coastal Carolina University and community colleges in San Mateo.
“So many of them say it just takes a lot of pressure off,” Tanya Clarke, scholarship director for the club, said about the students’ reaction when they learn they are the recipients of the scholarships. “I think in a lot of cases it almost makes it possible” for them to pursue higher education.
In a new approach to the scholarships, recipients will receive $1,500 annually for four years of college rather than in one lump sum. They must demonstrate continuing enrollment each year. This approach helps ensure that the funds are used for academic purposes and allows the Women’s Club to manage and grow their scholarship fund better. Students attending community colleges will receive the scholarship for four years, including their first two after transferring to a four-year institution.
Providing scholarships to local students is just one part of what the Coastside Women’s Club does. “We’re a social and service organization, and we engage in all kinds of activities,” Clarke told Coastside News. “We play mahjong, bridge, hike and have luncheons, but our mission is also to support the kids.”
