Coconut Creek ‘Do the Right Thing’ Award Winners Receive College Scholarships - Coconut Creek Talk

A group of talented young men and women who were recognized for making positive contributions at their schools or in their communities received $2,500 scholarships.
To receive the scholarship, they had to be recognized by the Do the Right Thing program during a monthly award ceremony before a Coconut Creek commission meeting.
Xena Ceron, a graduate of Coconut Creek High School, won in February 2024 for her leadership at her school. She will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and pursue a career as a pilot.

Alexander Almazar

Alexander Almazar graduated from Broward Virtual School. While he was visiting Coconut Creek High School, he found a backpack and turned it in, and was recognized in April 2025. He will attend Regent University in Virginia Beach and play college baseball.

Camryn Piskun

Camryn Piskun
Camryn Piskun graduated from Monarch High School and was recognized for her dedication and service to her school in October 2024. She will attend the University of Florida.

Gabriela Pearson

Gabriela Pearson
Gabriela Pearson won as a fifth grader at Winston Park Elementary School for reporting a bullying incident at her school. She won in March 2018 during the second Do the Right Thing ceremony. A graduate of Monarch High School, she will attend Broward College.

Sahara Apollonio

Sahara Apollonio graduated from Monarch High School and won in October 2023 for volunteering at her grandparents’ church camp in Italy. A member of the Coconut Creek Police Explorers, she will attend Florida State University.

Sabrina and Serena Rauf both graduated from Monarch High School and won in November 2024 for their work in organizing a drive for hurricane victims. They will attend Florida State University.

“This is the most scholarships and the most money we have ever awarded,” said Scotty Leamon, spokesperson for the Coconut Creek Police Department.
Do the Right Thing has been part of the city since 2018. The program’s goal is to foster positive relationships between local law enforcement and the community’s youth. It recognizes youth for their bravery and courage in volunteering, aiding law enforcement or first responders, acts of heroism, leadership, and positive role model behavior. The award recognizes students who make good choices, excel academically, and give back to their community, according to the Do the Right Thing website.
