SALINEVILLE — Nearly $530,000 in college scholarships were awarded during Southern Local High School’s senior assembly on May 21.
Sixty-three seniors were included in the Class of 2025 and recipients earned honor cords, awards and more as they turned the page in their life stories. Class adviser Bob Shansky welcomed family, friends and loved ones to the gathering and later noted that the combined scholarships totaled more than $529,788.
“That’s pretty impressive,” Shansky said, adding that the graduates’ future plans spanned from nursing, finance and civil engineering to the Army and the workforce.
Principal Rich Wright congratulated the seniors for their hard work and reaching the milestone.
“Today is about recognizing you for your accomplishment. I’m very proud of what you’ve done,” Wright said. “I really enjoyed this year. It was about togetherness.”
Scholarships were then disbursed and included the following:
— Mickaela Allison, Southern Ruritan Scholarship for $500;
— Cheyenne Bennett, Walsh University Baxter Honors Scholarship for $24,000; Governor’s Merit Scholarship for $5,000; Student Council Scholarship for $250, Kiwanis Student of the Month Scholarship for $750 and American Legion Scholarship for $1,000;
— Ryli Bettis, American Legion Scholarship for $1,000; Ira Lewis Thompson Scholarship for $250; University of Akron Merit Scholarship for $50,000 ($12,500 per year); and the Growe Family Well-Rounded Student Scholarship for $2,500;
— Brody Brown, Matthew Puckett Scholarship for $500; Lou Holtz Life Improvement Scholarship for $3,750; Terry Kampfer Memorial Scholarship for $1,077.89; and the American Legion Scholarship for $1,000;
— Noah Chase, Salineville-Southern Local Athletic Hall of Fame for $250; Matthew Puckett Scholarship, $500; American Legion Scholarship, $1,000; Quad County Coaches Association, $500; Columbiana County Coaches Association Scholarship, $500; and Brothers of Christian Instruction Scholarship for $72,000 ($18,000 per year);
— Hunter Dickson, Marcus K. Walter Memorial Scholarship for $2,500;
— Jazzmen Echols, Kiwanis Student of the Month Scholarship for $750 and Kent State University Rising Scholars (four years’ tuition);
— Casey Edmiston, Geneva College Alumni Scholarship for $60,000 ($15,000 per year);
— Katie Harshbarger, Josh Merriman Foundation Scholarship for $500; Hiram College Dean’s Scholarship for $52,000 ($13,000 per year);
— Casie Heddleston, Walsh University Vanasse Scholarship for $35,995;
— Jacob Junkins, Youngstown State University Excellence President’s Scholarship for $16,000 ($4,000 per year); YSU Sokolov Honors College, $12,000 ($3,000 per year); YSU Choose Ohio First Scholarship, $16,000 ($4,000 per year); Cowboy Up Youth Rodeo, $700; Negley Masonic Lodge No. 565 Scholarship, $500; and Growe Family Well-Rounded Student Scholarship, $2,500;

— Steven Saltzman, Kent State University Rising Scholars (four years’ tuition).
School awards were distributed next and included Kennedy Lewis and Brody Brown for OHSAA Highest Athlete GPA, and Katie Harshbarger and Colton Spahlinger, OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Awards. Meanwhile, parents and friends presented honor cords to Kennedy Lewis, Cheyenne Bennett, Gianna Rodgers, Kaitlynn Board, Jacob Junkins, Brody Brown, Lindzie Keyes, Colton Spahlinger, Katelyn Harshbarger, Gianna Pecorelli, Ethan Richards, Logan McCartney, Ryli Bettis, Alexandria Heckathorn, Casey Edmiston, Aiylee Treloar, Nathan Mehaffey, Xander Rockhold, Griffin Wellington, Gabryelle Deitch, Noah Chase, Casie Heddleston, Aaron Keoppel, Jazzmen Echols, Richard Sloan, Rachel Lynch, Treyton Goddard, Wyatt Bach, Steven Saltzman, Haley Kincaid, Hunter Dickson, Mystia Myers, Emma Prendergast, Olivia Sorgman, Sierra Bennett, Jacob Lemasters, Remington Nezbeth, Adam Winters, Paige Morris and Sarah Talbott while Abigail Richards and Nathaniel Smith were not in attendance. The event winded down with a reading of the class history by class cabinet members Brody Brown and Rachel Lynch, the class prophecy by Gigi Rodgers and Kennedy Lewis and the Last Will and Testament by Cheyenne Bennett. Juniors were moved to the honored seniors seating by Timmy Potts and Gianna Pecorelli and Kennedy Lewis concluded the assembly by thanking school leaders and families for their support.
