INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts have long been advocates for youth flag football. They helped prove their commitment Wednesday, announcing a new scholarship that aims to reduce financial barriers to the Colts Flag Football Leagues.
The Colts Flag Scholarship Fund is available to athletes from families who earn below the median household income in Indiana. It is also available to families enrolled in Medicaid; the Women, Infants, and Children program; and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Families can apply for the scholarship online. Registration fees range from $80 to $150, and the scholarship would cover most of the cost for more than 100 athletes.
The Colts are the first NFL team to offer a scholarship fund to flag football athletes across its network.
“Football is a game that should be shared and played by all who want to participate,” Colts Owner and Chief Brand Officer Kalen Jackson said. “This scholarship fund will help create more opportunities and access to the great sport of flag football for young people across Indiana.”
The leagues are open to boys and girls 4 to 14, with no experience necessary. Registration for the fall season is now open online with leagues in Indianapolis, Noblesville, Fort Wayne, New Haven, and Elkhart.
