COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Columbia native Rachel Thompson got the opportunity to meet Billie Jean King at the U.S. Open last week while accepting the national Novo Nordisk Donnelly Scholarship.
Rachel Thompson was awarded the $15,000 Novo Nordisk Donnelly Scholarship and got to meet Billie Jean King last Thursday at the U.S. Open.
The scholarship is given to student athletes who are living with diabetes. Funds from the scholarship are intended to be used to help support the recipient’s tuition and other expenses at the college or university of the student’s choice.
The scholarship was named after members of the Donnelly family who all played in Division I collegiate tennis while battling Type 1 diabetes and Novo Nordisk, a worldwide health company creating new medicines and treatments for those with diabetes.
