Community Awards Over $2 Million in Scholarships at Class Night – The Vineyard Gazette

Graduating seniors were presented with over $1.2 million in scholarships from Island-wide organizations Friday evening during Class Night at the Tabernacle.
The community also gave away $1,227,974 in post-grad scholarships, for a total of $2,473,494 in scholarships awarded to Vineyard students.
Throughout the evening, families and friends cheered as students exchanged hugs and handshakes with community members on stage. Over 150 Island organizations donated money to support the future endeavors of the class of 2025.
Director of guidance John Fiorito began the evening by congratulating the students for all their hard work.
“We invite you to now sit back and take in the names and stories you will hear tonight,” he said. “Hopefully it will allow you to reflect on what a wonderfully generous community we are a part of.”
Principal Sara Dingledy recognized the philanthropic efforts of the Island.
“Tonight, it’s when academic excellence and quality of character meets community generosity, and it really is an amazing spectacle,” she said.
The second annual Waylon Madison Sauer Memorial Scholarship was presented to 10 graduating seniors who were all Waylon’s classmates. Sauer died in a car accident in 2023 and would have been graduating on Sunday.
The teary-eyed audience erupted with a standing ovation when the Sauer family and friend Matthew MacMillan walked on stage.
“Waylon was my partner in crime,” his brother Amos said. “There will never be anybody like him. I am honored to be working with my parents to continue to work on this scholarship and carry Waylon’s legacy forward.”
“If you knew Waylon, you loved Waylon,” MacMillan added. “His commitment to the people in his life inspired me, and I will carry that with me forever.”
Doug Best from D. Best Construction surprised the students by pledging to give every graduating senior $100.
“I’m not a nonprofit nor do I have a memorial fund, but what I do have is a history on the Island in giving and I hope that you will follow that path as well as you graduate and enter your new life,” he said.
The students will receive their diplomas on Sunday afternoon at the Tabernacle, officially capping off their high school career. The graduation ceremony starts at 1:30 p.m.
