Here are this year’s recipients.
The SRHS Spirit scholarship was originally established by the Class of 1978 and later expanded to include all alumni of Sussex (Regional) High School. The Spirit Award recognizes a graduating student who exemplifies outstanding participation in and contribution to student life at SRHS, as well as within the broader community. Congratulations to Myah McAllister as this year’s recipient.
Hilary Jenkins and Lillian Mason-Coleman were awarded the Earl and Joan Cunningham Scholarship for 2025. Established in 2009 by Joan Cunningham, a passionate advocate for education, this scholarship was created to support local students in pursuing their academic goals. Although Joan has since passed away, her legacy continues through the generous contributions of her family.

Since 2005, the Sussex Area Community Foundation has proudly awarded scholarships started from the estate of Leo Forbes. These scholarships are intended for students who demonstrate strong academic performance, active community involvement, and financial need. Over the years, generous contributions from other caring donors who share Leo Forbes’ vision have helped to permanently increase the value of each scholarship, further enhancing support for deserving students. The 2025 recipients are: Kendra Burns, Hannah McNair, Bria Muir, Jessica O’Donnell and Chantale Williams.
The Fran Simpson Scholarship is made possible each year through generous donations and fundraising by the family of Fran Simpson. Fran was raised in the Sussex area and was a passionate supporter of agriculture, both in her professional life and personal time. This scholarship is awarded to a student from Belleisle Regional High School and Sussex Regional High School who has an agricultural background or intends to pursue post-secondary education in the field of agriculture. Congratulations to recipients Ashlynne Marr and Kaitlyn Mason.
Gerald Friars was born and raised in Wards Creek and never forgot his Kings County roots. A graduate of Sussex High School, he later met and married Dorothy (née Dann), who hailed from the Kingston Peninsula. In 1946, Gerald left the area to further his education at MacDonald College, eventually becoming a professor at the University of Guelph, where he taught for more than 20 years.
Later, he returned to New Brunswick to serve as chief scientist at the Atlantic Salmon Federation, continuing his lifelong commitment to education and environmental stewardship. In 2019, Gerald and Dorothy Friars made a meaningful contribution to the Sussex Area Community Foundation, establishing four scholarships to support local youth in their post-secondary pursuits. Congratulations to recipients Keira Dunfield, Katelyn Sharp, Ethan Bleakney, Nathan Moffett and Xavier Johnson.
To honour the memory of her brother, local philanthropist Ella MacLeod established the Norman MacLeod Humanitarian Award – a tribute to his lifelong dedication to family, faith, and community. Norman MacLeod, a devoted farmer, was widely respected for his kindness and unwavering commitment to others. He served as chairman of the Sussex Health Centre during its construction and volunteered on various boards, including those for local government, the dairy industry, his church, and the school district. In 2025, Joseph Allaby received this award.
The Waterford Gems established this scholarship to support a Sussex Regional High School student pursuing a career in the trades. This award continues the long-standing tradition of the Loyal Orange Benevolent Association (L.O.B.A.) in supporting students’ post-secondary education and contributing to the well-being of the community. Graduate Broden Davis received this award in 2025.
The Sussex Regional High School graduating class of 1998 created the “Unsung Hero Award” to support future graduates in their pursuit of further education. Established in 2020, the award honours students who contribute significantly to the school community – not with fanfare, but through quiet dedication and hard work. Recipients of this scholarship are actively involved in school life, consistently go above and beyond, and are the kind of people who step up when something needs to be done – without seeking recognition. Congratulations to the 2025 recipients, Lillian Mason-Coleman and Jessica O’Donnell.
Thank you to donors who see the benefit of helping students further their education to make these scholarships possible. The Sussex Area Community Foundation continues to connect local donors with community needs, supporting both scholarships and grants that strengthen the Sussex area.
