Eight Corry Area Middle-High School seniors were recently awarded Alumni Association Scholarships totaling $15,725.
Nearly 30 students applied for the 2024 allotment of the Virgil G. Curtis and Stacey R. Skinner scholarships awarded annually by the Corry High School Alumni Association. In total, $15,725 was awarded to eight Corry Area-Middle High School seniors. Scholarship winners were announced May 31 during the school’s annual awards assembly.
“We are very fortunate that someone had the foresight to start this scholarship fund, which has benefitted about 250 Corry graduates,” said Chairman of the Board Danielle Elchynski, who noted that the first scholarship was awarded in 1926.
According to the association’s bylaws, the association is charged with awarding the growth proceeds of the fund each year. With this year’s available funds, the scholarship committee awarded seven scholarships valued at $2,175 each from the Virgil G. Curtis fund.
Recipients were Jonathan Griffis, who plans to study welding at Lincoln Electric Welding Technology and Training Center; Isabella Kellogg, who plans to study the physician assistant program at Slippery Rock University; Keira Knight, who plans to study pre-physical therapy at Baldwin Wallace University; Tavon Kornikoski, who plans to study chemical engineering at Geneva College; Kendyl Scouten, who plans to study dental hygiene at Youngstown State University; Carter Slocum, who plans to study business at the University of Pittsburgh; and Baylee Smith, who plans to study biomedical engineering at Duquesne University.
Each student expressed gratitude and excitement when called for the award.
“I was ecstatic when I found out I was one of the alumni scholarship winners,” Scouten said. “This award will help me accomplish my academic goals by relieving a little bit of the stress I have about paying for my education.”
Slocum echoed that sentiment.
“The college that I am going to doesn’t offer much support or aid; this scholarship will lift some of my anxiety associated with the cost of college,” he said.
In addition, the alumni association acts as a steward for the Stacey R. Skinner Scholarship and awarded $500 to Kyla Frisina. She plans to pursue dental hygiene at Youngstown State University.
“This year’s selection process was difficult, because we had a high number of quality applicants,” said Elchynski. “Ultimately, each member of the scholarship committee reviewed each application and voted for those applicants who best met the criteria.”
Longtime Corry middle school teacher, Barb Beebe, serves on the alumni association’s board of trustees.
“I appreciate the opportunity to award scholarships to help students continue pursuing their education,” Beebe said. “I love that our community supports our students as they embark on the next step of their lives.”
Winners will be honored at the 150th Corry High School Alumni Association dinner that will be held Saturday at the high school.
The Virgil G. Curtis Memorial Fund was originally proposed by Arch C. Lyons of the Class of 1912. The scholarship was created in honor of Professor Curtis, who was superintendent of schools from 1873 to 1883, and again from 1905 to 1911. Alumni association records indicate, “The earnings of which would provide a scholarship each year to one worthy member of the graduating class.”
In recent years, the alumni association has voted to award multiple scholarships to deserving Corry seniors who demonstrate academic and school/community initiative.
To date, the alumni association has awarded over $440,000 in scholarships.
Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the scholarship fund can submit payment through https://www.corrycommunityfoundation.org/donors/give-today/scholarship-funds or mail a check to Corry Community Foundation, 4 S. Center St., Corry, PA 16407. Make sure to designate the Corry High School Alumni Scholarship.
The Corry High School Alumni Association is the oldest continuous alumni association in the United States. It has maintained an annual meeting each year, including 2020, which was held without a dinner due to Covid restrictions.
