DOBSON — Surry Community College workforce training students were recently awarded the State Employee Credit Union Bridge to Career Scholarship, established by the member funded tate Employee Credit Union Foundation to assist students across North Carolina in obtaining their educational goals.
Credit union representatives announced the scholarships during the October college Board of Trustees meeting. The foundation has provided $18,000 for up to 30 local students to receive a $500 check to be used for study at Surry Community College.
Nurse Aide students receiving scholarships are Amanda Bledsoe, Cameron Bowman, Miranda Galvan, Savanna Jones, William Lashley, Elizabeth McHone, Chasity Moser, and Jennifer Smith.
Paramedic students receiving scholarships include Kaitlyn Atkins, Christina Martin, Quang Ngo, and Kimberly Wingo.
Truck Driver Training students receiving scholarships are Linda Malmquist, James O’Neal, and Israel West.
The scholarship awards were presented by Josh Matthews, credit union assistant branch manager in Dobson; Brea Hull, senior vice president, Mount Airy; and Jennifer Pardue, the college’s director of college and career readiness and as well as a foundation Dobson Branch Advisory Board Member.
State Employee Credit Union Foundation introduced the Bridge to Career Program in 2018 to help students seeking careers with sustainable wages in their local communities through North Carolina’s workforce development program. Administered by each college, the initiative focuses on assisting individuals with finding vocational and job placement opportunities through eligible training programs that lead to state regulated or industry-recognized credentials. Scholarship funding will be applied to educational expenses.
With the combined commitments for the Bridge to Career and “People Helping People” Community College Scholarship programs, foundation funding for the NC Community College System totals more than $1.6 million annually.
