Music superstar and Charleston native Darius Rucker is honoring his late mother with an inspiring new scholarship for nurses at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The Carolyn G. Rucker Nursing Scholarship Program will support nurses at MUSC’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in advancing their education by covering tuition, fees, and academic materials. This tribute not only celebrates his mother’s legacy as a dedicated nurse but also fuels the future of nursing care for children and families in the Charleston community.
Darius Rucker, born May 13, 1966, in Charleston, South Carolina, rose to fame as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Grammy-winning band Hootie & the Blowfish, whose debut album Cracked Rear View skyrocketed to number one, earning multi-platinum sales with hits like “Hold My Hand” and “Let Her Cry.” Beyond his rock roots, Rucker successfully transitioned to country music, winning multiple awards including Grammy and Country Music Association honors.
Raised by a resilient single mom, Carolyn G. Rucker, Darius’s early life was shaped by the values of dedication and community care. His mother was a registered nurse who served at MUSC for decades, a role she held with passion and heartfelt commitment. She passed away in 1992 of a heart attack, before her son’s chart-topping fame, but her influence never faded.

Darius often credits his mother with instilling in him empathy, compassion, and a fierce work ethic. “My mom poured her heart into nursing. It was more than a job. It was her calling,” he explained.
He has spoken before about the lessons she taught him. On the Biscuits & Jam podcast, he recalled that even on days when she came home tired, she always made time for her children.
And in his 2023 album Carolyn’s Boy, he paid musical homage to her and put her nursing school graduation photo on the cover. It’s no stretch to imagine that she’d have been his biggest fan.

Rucker’s philanthropic roots run deep: he co-chaired the capital campaign that raised $150 million to build MUSC’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, inspired by his mother’s work there.
“I’m so proud to announce the Carolyn G. Rucker Nursing Scholarship for MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital! My mom poured her heart into nursing. It was more than a job. It was her calling,” Rucker shared on social media about the scholarship program. The scholarship aims to provide financial support for nurses pursuing further education in pediatric care, covering tuition, fees, and required school materials.
The program ensures that Carolyn G. Rucker’s legacy of compassionate care continues by empowering nurses to grow professionally while serving the Charleston community’s children and families with excellence.
Funding for this scholarship will come partly from Rucker’s annual hometown music festival, Riverfront Revival, held in North Charleston. MUSC children’s services chief Mark Scheurer called the scholarship “a powerful tribute to a mother’s legacy” and praised it as an invaluable support to nurses who provide vital care every day.
This scholarship not only removes financial barriers for nurses seeking advanced education but it also celebrates a son’s love by honoring his mother’s lifelong dedication. Recipients will be paired with experienced nurse mentors to guide both their education and professional growth. And to help ensure a strong pipeline of committed pediatric nurses, recipients will commit to working at least two years at the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital after graduation.
Thanks to Darius Rucker’s beautiful tribute, Carolyn G. Rucker’s compassionate spirit will continue to guide and support nurses who care for the community for years to come.
And to all the nurses reading this: may this scholarship remind you that your caring hands are worthy of every celebration, every support, every chance to grow… and applause just as loud as the final encore.
