DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Multiple Davenport high school students learned they won scholarships to the University of Iowa Monday morning.
20 students from various Davenport high schools were awarded the John Deere Scholarships, which covers 90% of the total cost to attend the University of Iowa.
This is the first year the scholarships have been awarded. The program started last fall with preparatory classes for low to middle income seniors at Davenport North, Central, West and Mid-City High Schools.
Emma Banks, a senior at Davenport Central High School, was one of the students surprised with the scholarship on Monday.
“My mom worked for Deere and was a part-time student, so now just being able to follow in her footsteps and work with Deere throughout my college career is unbelievable for me,” Banks said. “I’m super grateful of Deere and Iowa and to be able to be part of this program,”
The students were chosen from 41 applicants and had to write an essay and get recommendations from faculty. The scholarships were also determined based on need.
The winning students will be formally honored at a banquet at Deere’s world headquarters in Moline in May.
