Oswego, NY – The legacy of David Allan Sterio—a beloved musician, generous soul, and dedicated advocate for the musical arts—will continue to inspire the community with the David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship.The $1,000 annual scholarship will be awarded to an Oswego High School student pursuing music education or a career in music, ensuring that David’s passion for the arts lives on. Last year’s recipient of the scholarship was Gabe Cook, who now attends Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.
A lifelong resident of Oswego and a graduate of Oswego High School, David passed away unexpectedly on August 25, 2023. Throughout his life, he made an indelible mark on the Oswego County music scene. 
As president of the Musicians Union of Oswego County, he dedicated his time to supporting local musicians, fostering a vibrant musical community. David was a principal clarinetist with the Oswego City Band, captivating audiences with his masterful performances. His talents also extended to the saxophone, which he played with the Oswego Summer Stage Band and Stan Gosek’s Jazz Band, enriching the local music scene with his artistry and passion. Beyond his performances, David was deeply committed to sharing his love of music, participating in high school productions and church cantatas over the years.
A graduate of Ithaca College with a degree in Music Education and Performance, David followed in his father’s footsteps as a musician and played an integral role in the Nick Sterio Orchestra, carrying on a family tradition of musical excellence.
In honor of David’s profound contributions to music and his unwavering commitment to the community, the David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship provides financial support to a deserving Oswego High School student who shares David’s dedication to music and service.

Oswego High School students interested in applying should visit the Oswego High School Guidance Office and submit an application before the April deadline.
How to Contribute
Donations to the David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship Fund are greatly appreciated and will help ensure that David’s legacy continues to support young musicians for years to come.
