The St. Francois County Mental Health Board (SFCMHB) recently announced the presentation of the David Fischbeck Sr. Memorial Scholarship to two outstanding students from Mineral Area College. Made possible through the generosity of the Fischbeck family and friends, this scholarship reflects a shared commitment to enhancing access to mental health and substance abuse services.
The SFCMHB is dedicated to its mission of eliminating barriers to mental health and substance abuse services through advocacy, education, and collaboration. This mission aligns with the values championed by the Fischbeck family. By establishing the David Fischbeck Sr. Memorial Scholarship, the family has ensured that future generations of mental health professionals are equipped to continue this important work. The scholarship empowers students pursuing careers in mental health fields, addressing a critical need in today’s society.
On Nov. 14, two MAC students were awarded the David Fischbeck Sr. Memorial Scholarship, each receiving $750 to support their educational journeys in mental health. Erin Pulley is a student from MAC’s campus in Cape Girardeau. Sarah Lewis is a student from MAC’s campus at Park Hills. These scholarships recognize Lewis and Pulley’s academic excellence, resilience, and determination to contribute to the well-being of others.
The scholarship awards were presented during a ceremony attended by representatives of the Fischbeck family and the St. Francois County Mental Health Board. Leslie Fischbeck presented the scholarships Pulley and Lewis, celebrating their accomplishments and future potential.
Current SFCMHB President Megan Harter and Board Treasurer JoAnna Watts represented the organization at the ceremony. Both expressed gratitude for the Fischbeck family’s generosity and their commitment to advancing the board’s mission.
The Fischbeck family has aligned with the SFCMHB’s vision, and their decision to entrust the board with the administration of this scholarship reflects a deep mutual respect and shared purpose. Together, they are fostering a legacy of support that ensures individuals in St. Francois County have access to mental health resources and the professionals needed to provide them. The

Mental health remains a pressing issue, both locally and nationally. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness annually, highlighting the urgent need for trained professionals in this field.
By investing in students pursuing degrees in mental health-related fields, scholarships like the David Fischbeck Sr. Memorial Scholarship help address the shortage of qualified professionals and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. The scholarships also encourage recipients to return to their communities, further strengthening local support systems.
