WASHINGTON — Dozens of student volunteers with D.C.’s Department of Parks and Recreation were surprised Thursday — the department is giving them all college scholarships.
The “Rec for All: Play It Forward” scholarships are worth up to $5,000 each. Forty-five college students who participated in DPR’s sports programs were awarded.
Students told WUSA9 that they felt excited and were relieved and deeply grateful for the help with their college expenses.
“The scholarship means everything to me,” recipient Mecca Bey said. “It’s really funding my education and allowing me to kind of have the ease in my education going forward and then in turn give back to DPR later.”
“This means the world to me, you know, just the financial burden lifting off my shoulders, you know, just putting myself through college is one of the greatest moments of my life,” recipient Jayden Smith said.
This is the first year that DPR has offered these scholarships. The department says its to help relieve financial barriers for local student-athletes.
