Union City High School basketball standout Debrionna Jones was the surprise recipient of a $250 scholarship from the Dale Kelley Memorial Scholarship Fund following Tuesday night’s game against Lake County.
The honor – presented to one female and one male senior student-athlete in West Tennessee – was voted on by members of the Northwest Tennessee Basketball Association. Character, sportsmanship, and academics were all qualities considered when determining the recipients.
Longtime basketball official Keith Wish, who started the scholarship fund in memory of Kelley, was on hand to present Jones with the award.
Kelley officiated extensively at the high school and NCAA level and was the mayor of Huntingdon.
“I was honored to be able to present this scholarship on behalf of Mr. Kelley’s name and memory,” said Wish, a 20-year officiating veteran himself who has refereed 10 state tournaments. “NWTBA wishes the best for all student-athletes for years to come, and we hope the Northwest Basketball Association will make a difference in their lives.”
Jones signed scholarship papers earlier to continue her playing career at the University of Tennessee Southern. She is the Lady Tornadoes’ leading rebounder and ranks second in scoring.
“What a nice honor for Deb,” UC head coach Mason Storey said after Tuesday’s ceremony. “I think it’s just another example of what I’ve repeatedly said about her: As good of a player as she is, she’s an even better person with many good qualities.
“She’s a great representation of what we want our program to be.”
