VICKSBURG, Miss.(VDN)—Vicksburg native DeCorey Knight Jr. has been named the recipient of the GR8Shape Scholarship. The Vicksburg High School student will soon be graduating with $500.00 of extra funding to go towards his education, which was provided by the fitness center that has been operating since last year.
“I’m grateful for this, and I’m going to use this to go along with my football scholarship,” Knight said.
Knight was informed earlier this week that he won the scholarship after submitting an application and essay. His essay explained how he would use his future college degree to impact underserved communities and help people understand the importance of health.
Knight will be attending Holmes Community College on a football scholarship, where he plans to major in Kinesiology and later become a physical therapist. At VHS, Knight became the school’s All-Time lead rusher as he wrapped up his career with a total of 3,028 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns. He was in the National Technical Honor Society and the National Honor Society, along with being voted as Prom King.
“He’s always been a good student, and I knew him back at Vicksburg Intermediate School when I was the Assistant Principal,” Gr8Shape owner Katrina Hills said. “We have history and he’s always been a good kid who comes from a good family.”
2025 is the inaugural year that Hills has presented this scholarship through GR8Shape LLC, where she continues to teach health & wellness.
“It’s my way of giving back to the community for supporting GR8Shape,” she said.
Hills testified that Knight’s desire to give back and recognizing how important health is in certain communities stood out is his essay. There were a total of eight applicants.
“It was a really hard decision because they were all deserving and everyone had a desire to address mental illness in their essay,” Hills said.
GR8Shape is located on 3512 Manor Drive, Suite 3, where they continue to offer fitness classes, personal training and Yoga. The fitness center has also expanded to offer assisted stretching sessions.
