DENVER — The Denver Woman’s Press Club has awarded scholarships to two students for the 2025-26 academic year.
Kaelyn Diep, a student at Metropolitan State University of Denver, received the Frances Belford Wayne Merit Award. Hannah Olsson, a graduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder, received the Ruth Murray Underhill Award. Both were honored at a July 30 reception at the club’s historic Logan Street clubhouse, where they gave brief readings of their work.
Each award carries a $2,500 scholarship. For years, the program has been supported by the club’s annual jewelry sale and direct donations. The final jewelry sale took place in 2024 and members are planning a new fundraiser.
Diep, a Colorado native, is majoring in journalism and media production. She is editor-in-chief of The Metropolitan, MSU Denver’s student newspaper, and has produced content for Met Media. She plans to pursue a career as a writer and news editor.
Olsson, originally from Grand Junction, earned a degree in cinema and creative writing from the University of Iowa. She is editor-in-chief of Timber Magazine and managing editor for Sundress Publications’ Craft Chaps Series. She received CU Boulder’s Graduate Part-Time Instructor Recognition Award and hopes to become a tenured MFA professor.
The Frances Belford Wayne Merit Award honors the longtime Denver Post columnist known as “Pinkie” Wayne, who gained national recognition as an investigative reporter and feature writer. The award was first presented in 1940.
The Ruth Murray Underhill Award was established in 1985 to recognize a distinguished member of the club. Underhill was a pioneering anthropologist, professor at the University of Denver, and author of numerous books, including The Autobiography of a Papago Woman.
Founded in 1898, the Denver Woman’s Press Club is one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the country. The club has about 200 members, including journalists, novelists, poets, editors, podcasters, and screenwriters. It regularly hosts author events, writing seminars, and public programs at its clubhouse.
