Lois Kirk, who is with the Derick Kirk Foundation, presented two $1,500 music scholarships to Tatem Brown of Capital High School and Brock Tanner of Nitro High School in honor of her late son, a talented musician from Boone County, who passed away from cancer in 2007.
Slow Train will be performing at Bristol to Bakersfield & Beyond, a History of County Music, Volume II at the Capitol Theater in Charleston on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

Brown will study music education at Glenville State University, and Tanner will study voice and theater at Ball State University.
