COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel have announced $6 million in new grants to expand access to driver training across Ohio.
The funding, part of the Ohio Traffic Safety Office’s Drive to Succeed program, will provide scholarships to help more than 10,000 new drivers under age 21 earn their licenses.
Four Educational Service Centers — East Central, Fairfield County, Midwest Regional, and North Central Ohio — will each receive $1.5 million over the next two years to distribute scholarships throughout their designated regions.
“Being able to drive opens doors to jobs, school, and so many aspects of daily life,” DeWine said. “Through the Drive to Succeed program, we are making sure that more young people across Ohio have the chance to safely earn their license and build a stronger future for themselves.”
Since launching in 2022, the Drive to Succeed program has already supported more than 5,100 students.
Officials say this third round of funding ensures that every Ohio county can now offer scholarships to families who otherwise couldn’t afford driver education.
The announcement coincides with National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 19–25.
