There’s still time for Ontario students to apply for a variety of scholarships, grants, and bursaries to help them pursue post-secondary studies in agriculture-related fields. Here is a partial list of what’s still available.
Keith Gilmore Foundation: Hereford Youth Scholarship: Up to four $2,500 scholarships offered to students registered in ongoing undergraduate studies in any program leading to a career in the livestock industry. Applicants must be current or past members of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. Applicants must submit a resume of extracurriculars, two letters of reference, and a written statement outlining career goals. Application deadline: June 1.
Keith Gilmore Prize for Beef Cattle Innovation: Up to two $10,000 scholarships for students in senior undergraduate, veterinary, or postgraduate studies relating to livestock. Applicants must submit a resume of extracurriculars, three letters of recommendation, and a statement outlining career goals. Application deadline: June 1
Campbellbrook Fund Trade Scholarship: $1,000 awards to five 4-H Canada members planning to enter an accredited trade or apprenticeship program in order to support the agricultural sector. Apply by 10 a.m. on June 2.
McDonald’s Canada Future of Agriculture 4-H Scholarship: $5,000 awards to eight 4-H Canada members planning to enter the trades. Apply by 10 a.m. on June 2.
John Deere Canada 4-H Scholarships: $1,000 awards to two Ontario 4-Hers pursuing a trade. Apply by 11:59 p.m. on June 2.
TD 4-H Agriculture Scholarships: $3,000 awards to two Ontario 4-Hers planning to pursue a post-secondary education at a Canadian college or university in agriculture, ag-science, or agri-business. Apply by 11:59 p.m. on June 2.
Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers 4-H Scholarships: $1,000 awards to two 4-H Canada members who have applied to university or college, with a preference for an agriculture based program and ideally with a focus on sheep-related studies. Apply by 11:59 p.m. on June 2.
Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund Scholarships: Eight scholarships of $1,500 for students enrolled in a university or college. Selection is based on applicant’s agricultural background, 4-H and Junior Farmer involvement, community activities, future goals. Application deadline: June 1 at 11:59 p.m.
Christian Farmers Federation: Individual Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario districts offer scholarships of varying amounts. Submission deadline is June 15.
Ottawa Valley Seed Growers Association Youth Scholarship: Up to four $2,500 scholarships recognizing interest, knowledge, and achievements in the Eastern Ontario ag community. Applicants must be enrolled in at least the second year of studies at a university or college and planning to pursue a career in agriculture. Application deadline: June 30.
Ontario Joint Dairy Breeds Future Leaders Scholarship: Three scholarships of $1,500 for students enrolled in a post-secondary agricultural or dairy apprenticeship program who have completed first year. Applicants must be members or children of members of a dairy breed association. Application deadline: June 30.
Nuffield Canada: Up to six $20,000 scholarships for Canadian farmers aged 25 years to 50 (ish) to travel the world studying agriculture. The travel is for a minimum of 10 weeks within two years. Application deadline: June 30.
Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmer’s Program: Memorial Scholarship: Two $1,000 scholarships. One for an individual who has completed at least one year of postsecondary studies in agriculture and one for a high school grad enrolling in post-secondary education in agriculture. Applicants must submit an essay. Application deadline: June 30.
Animal Biosciences Academic Scholarship: One $5,000 award for full-time students in the University of Guelph’s Department of Animal Biosciences who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. Preference given to students who have not received any other departmental awards at the time of selection. Application deadline: August 15.
Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association Soil Health Scholarship: One $10,000 scholarship for a University of Guelph graduate student researching soil management issues. Application deadline: August 15.
Ontario Federation of Agriculture Bursary: Five post-secondary bursaries available to OFA family members: Three bursaries of $2,000 each for students pursuing post-secondary education for a career in an ag-related field, one bursary of $2,000 to a person completing an apprenticeship and one bursary of $2,000 to a person completing a post-graduate, veterinary or leadership development program. Applicants should be able to demonstrate industry-related achievements, a genuine passion for agriculture and rural issues and active community involvement. Application deadline: August 31.
SEPTEMBER
Jersey Canada: Three $1,000 scholarships available to Canadian Jersey enthusiasts enrolled in at least their second year of study at any post-secondary college or university. Application deadline: September 6.
Ontario Sheep Farmers: Undergrad Scholarship: One $500 scholarship for students enrolled in a first or second-year post-secondary program. Applicants must be 21 years old or younger, be registered sheep producers or have a parent/guardian sheep producer or be a member of a 4-H Ontario sheep club. Applicants must submit an article or video on select topics listed on website. Application deadline: September 6.
4-H Ontario Dairy Youth Education Award & Bursary: $1,000 awarded to a 4-H Dairy Club member currently in grades 9-11. The recipient collects upon completion of the first year of post-secondary education. Application deadline: September 26 at 5 p.m.
OCTOBER
Canadian Western Agribition: A series of $2,500 scholarships for students in their second or subsequent year of post-secondary studies who have participated in the Canadian Western Agribition. Application deadline: October 1
Alf and Mary Hales Undergraduate Scholarship in Food Science: One award of $1,500 for a student registered in semesters 5 to 8 of the University of Guelph’s B.Sc. program in Food Science. The applicant must have a demonstrated interest in Meat Science as well as a demonstrated financial need. Application deadline: October 7
Beef farmers of Ontario Degree Bursaries: Several awards of varying amounts are available to University of Guelph Students with a demonstrated financial need who have completed a minimum of 8.0 credits in the B.Sc. (Agr.), B.Comm.(Food and Agricultural Business), B.Sc.(Animal Biology) or B.Sc.(Food Science) program. Application deadline is October 7.
Scott Van Kampen and Don McCutcheon Memorial Award: $1,000 scholarship awarded for interest in agriculture and currently enrolled in college or university and who is or was involved with 4-H. Application deadline: October 11 at 5 p.m.
NOVEMBER
Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers Bursary: Three bursaries between $1,000 to $2,000 offered to students entering second or a subsequent year in a full-time university or college program related to the processing vegetable industry. Application deadline: To be determined in November.
DECEMBER
Holstein Canada: Young Leader Scholarships: Two $1,000 scholarships for Ontario students who have already completed their first year of college or university. Applicants must be regular or junior members of Holstein Canada, or be the child or employee of a Holstein Canada member. Application deadline: January 26, 2025.
