Doug and Maureen King have established a new scholarship through the Outer Banks Community Foundation, aimed at supporting students with learning differences. The first Doug and Maureen King Scholarship will be awarded in 2025.
“When you work with students who learn differently, you see firsthand how hard they try, even when things don’t come easily,” said Maureen King. “Doug and I wanted to do something that recognizes their effort and gives them a little extra support to continue their education.”
The Kings, longtime Dare County residents originally from Massachusetts, have dedicated their careers to public service. Maureen spent more than 30 years as a teacher in Dare County Schools, specializing in early literacy and learning disabilities, while Doug worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for more than three decades.
Inspired by Maureen’s passion for education, the Kings wanted to create opportunities for students who “struggle a little bit.” Their scholarship gives preference to high school graduates and home-schooled students with GED credentials from Dare County, Ocracoke and Currituck beaches, as well as College of The Albemarle graduates seeking further education. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two- or four-year college or university.
“Education was such a big part of Maureen’s life that it just made sense to give back in this way,” Doug said.
The Kings hope their scholarship provides a helping hand to students who may not always earn top grades but show determination to pursue higher education.
