Dozens of students were recognized and awarded scholarships during the Douglas County School District’s Scholarship Award Night on Wednesday.
During the award night, Douglas High School seniors Abigail Hamer and Basilia Pearson were among other Douglas High School students who received recognition for their academic achievements.
Hamer and Pearson each received $4,500 scholarships from the University Women’s Club of Carson Valley. They also received scholarships from other sponsors throughout the evening.
“Both young women have demonstrated outstanding academic abilities, served their community, and their teachers were impressed with their quality of character and work ethic,” said the press release.
Both plan to attend the University Nevada, Reno, where Hamer will be studying nursing and kinesiology and Pearson plans on pursuing psychology with a possible goal of entering the field of psychiatry.
The University Women’s club has been active in the Carson Valley since 1928. Members gather locally for social and informational meetings. Membership is open to women who wish to support students seeking higher education and to continue their own journey of learning. The annual scholarship awards are entirely funded by private donations from club members. Outside donations are also accepted from the community.
The 2025 committee members are Charlotte Booth, Teri Jamin, Kathy Brownlee, Pat Swisher, Melissa Ward and chair, Melanie Boudreau.
The University Women’s Club of Carson Valley were among several scholarship sponsors during the award ceremony, along with district elementary school alumni scholarships, DHS Memorial Scholarship, Nicole Snyder Memorial Scholarship, Molly Scholarship Awards, Block D Memorial Scholarship, and more.
