LOCK HAVEN — The Rotary Club of Downtown Lock Haven will give three scholarships to Central Mountain High School graduating seniors.
Each award is named in memory of a Rotarian who was active in our community.
The club will fund the base amounts of each scholarship, but members of the public are encouraged to make a donation to honor the legacies of these remarkable women.
ELEANOR KODISH SCHOLARSHIP
The Eleanor E. J. Kodish Memorial Scholarship is in memory of a club member who was always known for her unflagging encouragement. A former principal of Avis Elementary School, she received the Outstanding Educator Award from Mansfield University. She volunteered with many local organizations and was still active at the age of 95. “Eleanor Kodish Day” was declared to celebrate her on May 30, 2014.
The club named her a Rotarian of the Year and gave her the Service Above Self Award.
The scholarship goes to a graduating CMHS senior who will study toward a career in education at Commonwealth University-Mansfield. If no senior meets the criteria, Commonwealth University-Lock Haven will be substituted for Mansfield. If there is still no senior who meets the criteria, Penn State University will be substituted.
The base amount for the scholarship is $2,000, funded by the club. Additional donations in Mrs. Kodish’s memory are encouraged.
BETTY SCHANTZ SCHOLARSHIP
Downtown Rotary will also give the Dr. Betty Baird Schantz Memorial Scholarship to an active member of Interact, the Rotary organization for high school students.
Dr. Schantz retired from Temple University where she had been a professor, director of student teaching and assistant dean, among other positions. She later retired from Lock Haven University as associate dean. She also owned and operated Partnership House Bed and Breakfast. She tirelessly promoted our area and had a deep interest in local history.
A member of Downtown Lock Haven Rotary, she was a member and officer in numerous other local organizations, staying active into her 90s. The Friends of the Ross Library named her a Friend of the Year.
The base amount of this scholarship is $2,000, funded by the club. Additional donations in Dr. Schantz’s memory are encouraged.
ROBERTA WAY SCHOLARSHIP
The club will also continue to give the Roberta M. Way Memorial Scholarship, named for a late member of the former Rotary Club of Mill Hall Sunrise. “Bobbie” was very active in other community organizations as well, including Millbrook Playhouse, AAUW, the Clinton County Historical Society and the former KCnet. She retired as an accounting teacher.
The scholarship is for a college-bound graduating senior who demonstrates academics, commitment and community service and who is pursuing a career in education.
The base amount for this award is $1,500, funded by the family and by her former Rotary club. Additional donations in Mrs. Way’s memory are encouraged.
Young men and young women who will graduate from CMHS this year are encouraged to apply for any of these scholarships.
