DULUTH, Minn. — Local 101 in Duluth is once again opening up their Ernest Butler and Pamela Wutz Scholarship to those looking to explore a career in fighting fires. The scholarship, which has been given out each year since 2021, is funded by the Local 101 Firefighters Union, as they hope to give a helping hand to prospective members of their organization.
The scholarship, which is named for Duluth’s first African American firefighter (Butler) and first female firefighter (Wutz) is being used by the union to help reach not only to underrepresented communities, but anyone who has an interest in fighting fires who have not had the financial means to begin their career.
“We thought it was important, again, our membership voted to self-fund this scholarship, and we have given anywhere from 1 to 4 scholarships out every year to deserving candidates,” said Duluth Fire Station 8 Captain and Local 101 Member Nick Biondich, who also happens to be the scholarship committee’s chair. “What that does is it allows them to attend Lake Superior College Firefighter 1, 2, and Hazmat Class, which then allows them to have all the certifications they would need to apply for a job with the Duluth Fire Department.”
You can find that application here or email local101scholarship@gmail.com with more information on Local 101 social medias.
