The Rodney Ems Memorial Scholarship committee announced two high school seniors, Chesnie Patrick of Montezuma-Cortez High School and Zachary Griswold of Durango High School, as the recipients of its 2024 annual scholarship. The scholarship recognizes both academic and athletic achievements of students pursuing higher education. Both recipients will receive $2,000 scholarships as they pursue their college careers.
REMS’ scholarship committee recognized these two exceptional student-athletes, especially as members of their respective golf teams. The scholarships reflect the importance of the game of golf in developing character, leadership and fairness in these young adults.
Patrick has been commended for her school and community leadership. She credits golf with teaching self-reliance and sportsmanship and she loves the camaraderie inherent in the game. In addition to golf, she has participated in choir, theater and cheer. She competed in the state championships in both golf and cheer. She will attend Colorado Mesa University where she will major in kinesiology. Patrick’s current plan is to pursue pediatric physical therapy as a career.
Griswold has been recognized for his strong work ethic, artistic creativity and diligence. He credits golf with teaching the importance of patience, focus and practice. He values both the competitions and friendships he has experienced on the course. Griswold has been team captain all three years in high school and he competed at the state championship level twice. He plans to attend the University of Washington with a double major in business and photography.
The Rodney Ems Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Rodney Ems, a passionate golfer and avid community supporter. Ems believed in the power of education and the values that golf instills. The scholarship is open to student golfers who are seniors from a Colorado high school in the Four Corners. Among other qualities, applicants need to demonstrate their love of the game of golf and how it has had an impact on their lives.
