THATCHER – The United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties (UWGGC) has awarded a $150,000 grant to the Eastern Arizona College (EAC) Foundation to fund scholarships for local students during the 2025-2026 academic year. This generous donation will provide 25 students with the opportunity to pursue higher education at EAC.
For the past 11 years, UWGGC has supported scholarships for EAC students, benefiting a total of 249 individuals. Currently, 20 students are attending Eastern Arizona College because of this vital program. The scholarships are made possible through the generosity of employee and matching donations from Freeport-McMoRan, the City of Safford, the Town of Thatcher, and other community partners.
“These scholarships provide transformational opportunities for students who hope for a brighter future,” said David Udall, EAC Foundation executive director. “They can come to EAC to receive training and develop skills that directly lead to better employment in our community. Many continue their higher education to become educators, health care workers, engineers, accountants, and business managers. Eastern is a great place to learn from instructors who know and care for their students, all at an affordable price. It’s a unique place that provides a total college experience without being so big that students feel left behind.”
Denise Benton, UWGGC executive director, emphasized the importance of accessible education for all students. “Every student, regardless of income or race, deserves a high-quality education,” Benton said. “Together, we can help all students in our communities reach their full potential.”
The continued partnership between UWGGC and the EAC Foundation highlights a shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities for local students. By removing financial barriers, these scholarships enable students to pursue their dreams and contribute to the workforce in Graham and Greenlee counties.
