Fifteen students from Tyler ISD received a surprise visit at the Career & Technology Center (CTC) last week where they were presented with the June S. Flock Healthcare Scholarship by Tyler Junior College (TJC) and Christus Health.
The scholarship is part of the June S. Flock Endowment, which was established last year to recognize students pursuing an education in the healthcare industry.
“It is important to really make sure that healthcare is recognized for these kinds of scholarships,” said Mitch Andrews, Vice President of Institutional Advancement for TJC and Executive director of the Tyler Junior College Foundation.
With a generous donation of $1 million by the Flock family, the June S. Flock Scholarship Endowment aims to empower and motivate students who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers to achieve their educational goals.
“June and Jack Flock were a wonderful couple,” Andrews said. “Jack was a longtime trustee for TJC … and they were very giving to both TJC and Christus Trinity Mother Frances.”
When June passed, she left the foundation a significant gift to fund a scholarship endowment that is supporting students in the Rise Up program, which was developed as a partnership between Christus and TJC to educate high school students on different pathways in healthcare.
“Healthcare is a more-than-$3 billion industry here in Tyler,” Andrews said. “We’re supporting a workforce and an industry that’s important to our city, the well being of our city and, of course, providing well-educated and trained healthcare professionals that serve our citizens.”
According to Andrews, at least 60 percent of full-time students at TJC require financial assistance to pursue higher education.
“We are right at 100 million in assets with an endowment pool of about 95 million that provides an annual distribution every year to support the college, our faculty, our staff — but most importantly — our students,” he said. “We award a significant amount of scholarships to TJC students, which is very important to our students.”
Last year, they awarded $3.3 million in scholarships and Andrews says they are on track to exceed that amount this year.
“Authentic partnerships are one of our core values and we have an incredible partnership with Christus,” he said. “It’s such a great opportunity to partner through the Rise Up program that helped to engage students early on to consider professions in the health care area and that we’re able to partner with them and provide scholarships to help those students achieve their educational goals and realize their dreams.”
More than 30 high school students from East Texas were awarded the inaugural scholarship, including Mallory Kniffen from Tyler Legacy High School.
“I was so excited when I found out that I got it,” she said.
Kniffen, who wants to be a pediatric nurse, also plans on playing softball at TJC.
“I’ll get to do two things that I love at the same time,” she said. “I really appreciate the opportunities that CTC provided.”
Each student received $1,200 to use toward furthering their education at TJC. The scholarships are renewable if students remain in good standing with the college.
“It was wonderful to see how excited they were to receive a scholarship,” Andrews said. “We look forward to them coming to TJC and being part of the Apache family.”
