LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University Foundation has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing $1 million in privately funded scholarship dollars available for EOU students for the first time in its history.
This achievement comes at a critical time when the financial challenges faced by students, especially students in rural communities, are more significant than ever. Four out of every five EOU students are eligible for financial aid, and roughly 34% come from low-income families. Oregon ranks 44th in the nation for state support per student, which means scholarship dollars play an ever greater role in making college affordable. With the additional support from the Foundation, more students will be able to achieve their academic goals and graduate with less debt.
The announcement came at the Foundation’s annual Celebration of Scholarships event, which recognizes the contributions of its donors and connects them to their student scholarship recipients.
“This is a momentous occasion for Eastern Oregon University and our students,” EOU President Kelly Ryan said. “The EOU Foundation’s ability to provide over $1 million in scholarships is a direct reflection of our donors’ deep commitment to student success. Combined with the institution’s investment of more than $2.6 million in additional awards and fee remissions, we are ensuring that cost is not a barrier to helping us achieve our mission to educate students, and this financial support is crucial in fulfilling that mission.”
The combined efforts of the EOU Foundation and the University’s financial aid programs ensure students from all walks of life have the opportunity to receive a quality education. The scholarships provided by the Foundation help to alleviate the financial pressures many students face, allowing them to focus on their studies and personal growth.
“Investing in education is investing in the future of our communities,” Foundation Board Chair James Gorham said. “The scholarships provided by the EOU Foundation are investments. Our students are the future leaders of our communities, and by supporting their education, we are not only helping individual students achieve their dreams but also contributing to the vitality, vibrancy, and development of our region.”
Founded in 1964 by local business leaders seeking to support their local college, the EOU Foundation has played a pivotal role in supporting the University’s mission and enhancing students’ educational experience. Scholarships provided by the EOU Foundation support students at every stage of their academic journey, from freshmen to seniors and even graduate students. The EOU Foundation’s achievement of surpassing $1 million in privately funded scholarships is a significant milestone that reflects the dedication and generosity of its donors. Combined with the university’s additional financial support, this milestone ensures that cost will not stand in the way of student success at EOU.
