The American Association for University Women (AAUW) Toledo Branch recently announced that longtime partner Catharine S. Eberly Center will house the Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer Fund Scholarship of Excellence in an endowed fund starting at $110,000.
AAUW Toledo will award the Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year and the Eberly Center will begin awarding the scholarship in fall 2025.

Eberly Center; and Ann Strickler and Jeanie Lee, both AAUW members.
The Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer Scholarship is named after Katherine Easley Wemmer, who joined The University of Toledo in 1919 as the first female faculty member and dean of women (a role that merged with the dean of men in 1950 to become dean of students). Wemmer served in that capacity for 28 years, retiring in 1947. During her career, she assisted female students needing financial aid in securing high-profile jobs, helped recruit women for duty in the Navy during WWII, sponsored The University of Toledo branch of the League of Women Voters and served as president of the Toledo chapter of the American Association of University Women.
In 1977, AAUW Toledo established the Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer Trust Fund with monies provided from the estate of William Wemmer in memory of his wife, Katherine. Since the first three scholarships were awarded in 1978, more than 125 students have benefitted from the Wemmer Scholarship.
“We are pleased with the consensus of the AAUW/Toledo Members who are transferring the Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer’s endowment fund to The University of Toledo Foundation, Eberly Center for Women for the benefit of the AAUW Wemmer Scholarship Fund,” said Nina Corder and Michelle Radtkin, past presidents of AAUW/Toledo, in a joint statement.
“This preserves Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer’s legacy for generations to come and aligns with the vision and mission of empowering University of Toledo Women to pursue higher education.”
Danielle Lutman, associate director for the Catharine S. Eberly Center, worked with AAUW Toledo and the UToledo Foundation to house the AAUW Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer Fund Scholarship of Excellence. The fund agreement was signed in fall 2023 and the monies transferred at the beginning of May.
“I am grateful for the work and advocacy of the AAUW Toledo Branch, and with their continued partnership and support of the Eberly Center,” Lutman said. “AAUW Toledo Branch has an undenieable impact on advancing gender equity in the greater Toledo area and the Eberly Center is honored to continue awarding the AAUW Dean Katherine Easley Wemmer Scholarship to UToledo students.”
