Eleven local students were taken by surprise when they were awarded the Hispanic and Latino Legacy Scholarship by the Public Education Foundation (PEF), totaling $220,000 on Monday.
The high school students, along with their families, believed they were attending a final interview as part of the scholarship selection process. Instead, they were met with the life-changing news of receiving a $20,000 scholarship each.
"Receiving this $20,000 scholarship is not something that happens every day," said Valeria, one of the recipients. "This is probably the biggest thing I’m ever going to receive in my life, and I’m very grateful for that."
The scholarships were funded through the Hispanic and Latino Legacy Dinner, an annual event that honors four inspiring Hispanic and Latino leaders while raising funds to provide transformative educational opportunities for local students through PEF’s Scholarships Plus program.
The next Hispanic and Latino Legacy Dinner is scheduled for September 30, 2025.
