The Elks Lodge #680 hosted a dinner recently for their scholarship awardees and families.
After the meal, the students received a certificate and a $1000 scholarship check. Nine of the 12 recipients attended and three had prior commitments.
Coby Franklin arrived with his parents, Josh and Holly Franklin and his sister Kinley.
Coby will attend Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids for a degree in special education. He made this decision after volunteering with Special Olympics.
“I helped coach and mentor special education kids through Unified Sports, the special Olympics of Michigan,” he said. “This will help with tuition. I feel it’s my responsibility so my siblings can get what they need.”

“Our club is very proud of these scholarships,” said Linda Geeseman, committee chair. “We are one of the few clubs in Michigan (that does this) and we give the most scholarships. This is what’s important to us, serving our veterans, kids and the community.”
“This will help pay my college fees,” said Emma Holdship, a CHS recipient. “I’m also working this summer. My career goal is to be successful in life and provide for my future family.”
Students are selected by the scholarship committee who review applications based on academic achievement community involvement, identified goals and obstacles they have overcome.
