Hot Springs Elks Lodge 380 recently awarded eight scholarships and two Grand Lodge Most Valuable Student awards. Elks Lodge 380 recently honored scholarship recipients with a dinner for the students and their families at the lodge, followed by an award ceremony. Four traditional academic scholarships were awarded and for the first time this year, four vocational scholarships were awarded.
According to a news release, academic scholarships were awarded to Drew Dettmer, Cutter Morning Star High School; Troy Riggs, Fountain Lake High School; Nevaeh Poteete, Mountain Pine High School; and Jalea Hawthorn, Cutter Morning Star High School. Nevaeh Poteete and Drew Dettmer were also awarded “Grand Lodge Most Valuable Student” awards from the Elks National Headquarters. Vocational scholarships were awarded to Peyton Beckwith, Mountain Pine High School; Abbie Taylor, Lake Hamilton High School; Elexa Leeper-Berg, Mountain Pine High School; and Carrie Wright, Mountain Pine High School.
“The students applied for scholarships and were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement and work history, among other requirements,” the release said. “All students spoke to the Elks present and told of their goals, which included computer science, cyber security, chemistry and medical school, criminal justice, graphic design, radiology technician, occupational therapy, marine repair and HVAC — a varied group of interests and goals.”
“The Elks announce to the school counselors in the fall of each year when applications are to be submitted to the Lodge. Scholarships are one of many youth support programs provided by the Elks, including also Drug Awareness Programs, toys at Christmas for families in need, a ‘Fun Dog Show,’ among others,” the release said.
