CHAPPAQUA, NY – Mountainside Treatment Center will once again offer scholarships to students whose lives have been touched by addiction.
The 2021 Brighter Future College Scholarship was conceived as a part of Mountainside’s stated mission to end the stigma surrounding addiction and help those impacted by substance abuse lead happier, more fulfilling lives. The group said its aim is to help students affected by drug or alcohol dependency pursue their dreams and passions.
Through a personal essay, scholarship applicants are asked to share how their addiction or their loved one’s addiction has affected their life, raising awareness and highlighting the reality of this disease.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that around 25 percent of children in the U.S. are raised in a household where addiction is present. When substance use is present in the home, children are more likely to have poor performance in school, low self-esteem, and an early onset of drug experimentation, according to the study.
“Because of the impact substance abuse has on the family system, the Mountainside Brighter Future Scholarship means so much more than cost assistance for college,” Mountainside Director of Continuing Care Candace Dean said, announcing this opening of this year’s scholarship contest. “This scholarship shows young adults that their voice is powerful and crucial for change and that there is hope for a brighter and better future ahead.”
Mountainside will award up to ten high school juniors or seniors a $1,000.00 scholarship.
Interested students can apply by submitting an application which includes a 500 to 800-word essay that covers how addiction has altered their lives. Applications are open to high school students in Bergen County, Fairfield County, Litchfield County, New York County, Suffolk County and Westchester County.
Mountainside is nationally recognized for the effectiveness of its drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs. Mountainside is one of only three addiction treatment centers in the United States to hold a 3.7 ASAM certification as well as dual accreditation from CARF International and The Joint Commission. The center is known for partnering with each client and the client’s family and healthcare professionals in developing and executing individualized treatment plans that promote long-term sobriety.
