Proceeds from the 10th annual “Music for the Y” will go toward the Bereznak Anthony youth scholarship fund.
“We would like to help as many people as possible,” said Jim Laputka, who recently joined the Freeland YMCA as executive director.
The fundraiser at St. Michael’s Recreation Center, 300 Fern St, from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday features the food truck Retro Dough and entertainment by The Mighty Three and Tom Molinaro.
Established in honor of the late Leonard Breznak, the scholarship fund offers similar financial assistance he received years ago after his father died. A local priest provided the then 9-year-old with a scholarship to the Freeland Y.
“We’re impressed with the programs the Freeland YMCA offers local youth,” the Brezenak family said in a news release. “It made such a positive impact on our husband and father that we’re grateful to be able to pay it forward and help other families the way the Y helped ours.”
Full and partial financial assistance will be available through the Bereznak Anthony Fund.
Funded by individual donations, which they seek, the program is not just for kids in Freeland.
“Anybody who needs it and has a fixed or limited income, come over to talk to us” Laputka said. “Most programs are geared toward children, but several family memberships are paid for with the fund, and it’s open to all ages.”
The scholarship, which was established in 2022, has helped more than 20 recipients.
The Freeland YMCA, located at 600 Front Street, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., but hours will change after renovations to the gymnasium. They hope to be finished by the end of this month.
“The renovation project includes a new roof and ceiling and extensive work to the gymnasium,” Laputka said.
