NEWBURYPORT — The Exchange Club of Greater Newburyport held its annual scholarship meeting on June 4 at the Starboard Galley with President Stuart Deane presiding.
Accepting $1,000 scholarship awards were Giavanna Sico of Triton Regional, who will be attending Bridgewater State University to major in early childhood education, and Quinn Daniels of Newburyport High, who will be attending Coastal Carolina to major in special education.
Claudy Charles stood in for his daughter, Malialani Charles of Pentucket Regional, who at the time of the meeting was en route to Hawaii. She will attend Suffolk University to major in psychology.
The Newburyport scholarship was in memory of Maria Iacono, the wife of a former member who was instrumental in boosting the club scholarship fund, and the Pentucket scholarship is designated as the Anthony J. Fusco Community Service Award for the former local club and New England District president.
In attendance at the meeting were his widow, Dawne Fusco, and his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Ernie D’Agostino.
The Exchange Club of Greater Newburyport is part of the National Exchange Club, a service organization founded in Detroit in 1911.
The local club sets up flags for the Derek Hines Flag Day “Wounded Warrior” 5K at Cashman Park, presents “Kids Day in the Park” at Atkinson Common during Yankee Homecoming, conducts the Sept. 11 “Field of Honor” ceremony on the Bartlet Mall to honor those who serve and sets up blue pinwheel parks around the area to draw attention to the prevention of child abuse.
The club also serves meals at the local Salvation Army and throws an annual Christmas party for a local group home in addition to making financial contributions to assorted local causes.
The club meets at noon on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the Starboard Galley.
