The Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Chapter of the international Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering awarded the 2025 recipients of the George and Irene Epstein Memorial Scholarships on May 6.
It marks the 29th year that Fairfax High School students received the scholarships and the fifth year students at Girls Academic Leadership Academy were bestowed the awards. As education chairman of the Los Angeles Chapter of SAMPE, Dr. Howard Katzman, senior scientist at the Aerospace Corporation, announced the six high-ranking Fairfax High School seniors, two of whom will receive scholarships and four others who will receive book awards, and five seniors from GALA, two of whom will receive scholarships and three who will receive book awards. The scholarship recipients are Hillary Tong and Mukhammadjon Mukhitdinov, from Fairfax High School, and Chloe Watkins and Johana Miel, of GALA. The Fairfax High students who received book awards are Mohammad Erfan Firooz Bakhsh, Jocelyn Puerto, Ronisa Zalzar and Yulitzen Juarez. The GALA students who received book awards are Emma Kenney, Wendolyn Stanfill and Trinity De Leon-Chavarria.
The Irene Epstein Memorial Scholarship program was initiated in 1996 shortly after the death of Irene Epstein to recognize her desire to assist financially needy, academically deserving students to attend college to study engineering, science, mathematics or medicine. In 2023, with the passing of Irene’s husband George Epstein, a longtime Fairfax District resident and supporter of Fairfax High School, SAMPE changed the name to the George and Irene Epstein Memorial Scholarship.
