Fannin County, Texas — Linda Beth Norwood of Celeste High School and William Scoggins of Leonard High School were selected for their exceptional academic achievements, strong leadership qualities, and inspiring essays that reflect core American values.
Linda Beth Norwood, daughter of Clint and Alice Norwood, valedictorian of Celeste High School, will attend Texas Tech University to pursue a degree in agricultural communications. In her essay, “Heroes of the Nation,” Linda Beth highlighted the leadership of George Washington, quoting his belief that “Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful, and most noble employment of man.”
Linda Beth beautifully connected this principle to her own mission: to use social media and technology to elevate public awareness and appreciation for the agriculture industry. Linda Beth’s vision of combining tradition with innovation reflects the very spirit of American progress.
William Scoggins, valedictorian of Leonard High School, will also be attending Texas Tech University, majoring in mathematics. He plans to pursue a master’s degree and a career in statistics, data analysis, research, or finance. William’s essay, “Defending Democracy,” was a compelling call to civic responsibility.
William wrote and expanded on each of these three areas, “We must teach people to look for the validity of the sources in which they get their information. We should help people understand bias. And, we need to educate people to understand their role as an active participant and civic responsibility in government and to encourage participation in our democratic process.”
