The Farragut Stakeholders Group held its second annual College Scholarship Awards Dinner on Friday, June 27, 2025 at Rustik Tavern on DeKalb Avenue. Guests enjoyed a family-style meal and conversations that highlighted student journeys dreams and the real impact of the scholarship.
“Growing up in Farragut Public Housing, I often wished for the kind of opportunities these young women are receiving today. I remember all too well the challenges I faced, especially the lack of financial support, it was a painful reality. Seeing the joy and pride on their faces now fills me with hope and affirms that the efforts we've made over the years have truly borne fruit," said Latrel Mosso, leader of the Farragut Stakeholders.
This year’s recipients Ashantie Howard of Medgar Evers College, Mariah Wilcher of Borough of Manhattan Community College and Malaya Williams of Coppin State University all call Farragut Houses home. Each maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 and completed a competitive process that started in March. Applicants shared academic achievements, extracurricular work, community service and essays. Finalists in May had to submit transcripts proof of residence and letters of recommendation.
Awardees each received a $2,500 scholarship check, an FSG swag bag and a special gift bag from Brooklyn Org, the group’s fiscal sponsor. As a bonus, they got refurbished laptops from TechFin a Brooklyn nonprofit tackling the digital divide by refurbishing and redistributing used computers to low-income families.
“It brings me so much joy to know that we’re investing in the dreams of young people who live right here in our community,” said Cheryl Goodman, one of the Farragut Stakeholders.
The Farragut Stakeholders Group continues to deliver community programs focused on youth development and education. Past efforts have included youth basketball and mentoring adult health and fitness classes, Broadway trips, comedy nights, holiday celebrations and block parties.
