More than $70,000 was given in scholarships to 52 recipients during the Fort Cavazos Family Scholarship Fund award ceremony May 8 at the Main Post Chapel on Fort Cavazos.
The FCFSF was established in 1985, and ever since, the nonprofit has made it their mission to support military families in their pursuit of higher education by providing monetary assistance through scholarships. Today, their outreach spans Bell, Coryell, McLennan, Travis, Williamson and Lampasas counties.
Angel Eagen, Fort Cavazos Family Scholarship Fund president, said the recipients represent students at the top of their class, talented athletes, parents, community volunteers, gifted musicians and more, but they all had one thing in common.
“They’ve skillfully juggled the challenges of military life with their education and show a very bright and promising future,” she said.
During the ceremony Eagen shared every eligible high school senior and spouse who applied and met all the criteria were going to be awarded a scholarship.
The 52 scholarships awarded ranged from $750 to $5,000 — totaling $76,500.
Attendees and recipients heard from a 2023 scholarship recipient, Mary Decker, who is currently attending Samford University in Alabama, pursuing a nursing degree.
She said the financial assistance from the scholarship she received has relieved the stress of paying for college and allowed her to be involved in on-campus organizations. She warned the recipients college can be tough, but she was confident they can tackle any obstacle in their way.
“You are equipped to handle such a challenge,” Decker said. “As cheesy as all of this sounds, do not be afraid of the outside of your comfort zone. It is where the most growth occurs. If plan A doesn’t work out, don’t hesitate to move on to a different one. If you get to plan Z, start using numbers instead. Be patient with yourself. You have come this far and are more than deserving.”
Command Sgt. Maj. Calvin Hall, U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Cavazos command sergeant major, addressed those gathered at the Main Post Chapel. He thanked the FCFSF and their volunteers for their hard work in making the pursuit of higher education easier for members of the Fort Cavazos community. He recognized the challenges of military dependents and spouses, who make sacrifices for service members, including multiple relocations and separation from their loved ones, and then addressed the recipients directly.
“We cannot thank you enough for your resiliency and commitment. We are always grateful for your sacrifices, and we will always be there to support you,” he said. “Regardless, all of you have something in common — you all have exhibited exceptional perseverance and resiliency. Recipients, as you continue your academic journey, do not forget the parents and the families who have supported you, inspired you and motivated you.”
Eagen expressed her gratitude to the organizations and individuals who donated to the FCFSF, making it possible to provide thousands in scholarships. She said she was humbled to be in the position to give away the scholarships to the deserving recipients.
“Education is the cornerstone of opportunity, and being able to support these individuals in their pursuit of higher education is immensely rewarding,” she said. “These scholarships represent more than just financial assistance; they symbolize our community’s investment in the future while empowering individuals to achieve their dreams to make a positive impact. It’s a privilege to play a part in their journey, and I’m excited to see how the recipients will continue to thrive.”
Eagen will step down as president of the FCFSF in the next academic year, but she has high hopes for the future of the organization.
“My hope is that the scholarship fund will continue to flourish, expanding its reach and impact to benefit even more military dependents pursuing higher education, especially our military spouses,” she said. “Additionally, I envision the scholarship fund to become increasingly integrated into the fabric of our community, fostering connections and opportunities for collaboration among scholars, alumni, donors and community partners. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of deserving military dependents and contribute to the advancement of opportunity and education. While my tenure may be coming to a close, I have full confidence in the dedication and vision of the incoming leadership and the continued support of our community.”
