The recipients were recognized in person at an award ceremony at FedPoint’s headquarters in Portsmouth on Tuesday, May 7, during National Nurses Week. Each recipient expressed their gratitude on being chosen for a scholarship.
“I honestly didn’t expect to get it—out of all the other applicants—so I feel really honored,” Shumway said. Varney echoed those sentiments, saying being chosen “makes me very proud of myself, and I’m very grateful to FedPoint for granting me this scholarship.”
Windisch said she wants to become a nurse practitioner, so the scholarship “is going to help me so much getting through all that school.” Rocheleau said, “It meant so much to get $5,000, especially being a first-generation college student.”
“I’m thrilled to see the commitment of these students to become tomorrow’s nurses has been strengthened by the annual FedPoint Nursing Scholarship,” said New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu. “Having all four recipients come from New Hampshire is a testament to our students’ enthusiasm to improve the lives of others. Anna, Annabelle, Callie and Lauren – congratulations!”
This is the second year of the company’s nursing scholarship program, which is open to graduating high school students living in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. Its objective is to help raise awareness of the benefits of a career in nursing and help support the next generation of nurses by making a meaningful financial contribution to their training.
“By offering these scholarships, we are planting seeds and nurturing the aspirations of people who do now and will continue to support their community through enhanced education, all while filling a resource gap and strengthening the nursing profession,” said FedPoint CEO Kevin Hill. “This year’s recipients join a community of people who are committed to making a difference and find happiness in helping guide and heal. This step, this career, this choice is very important for the well-being of the rest of us.”
FedPoint welcomed several guest speakers to the award ceremony, who lauded the recipients for their strong work ethic, passion for community, academic rigor, and a commitment to pursue a career in nursing. Speakers included 2023 FedPoint Nursing Scholarship recipient Grace McHugh, who spoke about her experience as a first-year student in the nursing program at the University of New Hampshire, as well as Alyssa O’Brien, PhD, RN, Program Director of the Undergraduate Nursing Program at the University of New Hampshire, and Cornerstone VNA Vice President of Operations Jennifer Ufkin.
“I want to congratulate these four outstanding young women and thank them for their commitment to the field of nursing,” said Brian Frankenfield, FedPoint’s Executive Sponsor of Corporate Giving. “FedPoint recognizes the importance of a strong healthcare system here in New Hampshire and around the country—one with talented, compassionate, and intelligent individuals able to lead us into the future of the profession. With young people the caliber of Annabelle, Anna, Callie and Lauren entering the field, the future of nursing is bright.”
