Fellowship and Scholarship Committee presented at Academic Senate – thenorthwindonline.com

The NMU Academic Senate held a meeting in the Northern Center on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The meeting was called to order at 3:05 p.m.
At the start of the meeting, Enrico Sassi, Assistant Director of Research and Sponsored Programs, and Ryan Bond, Student Support Specialist Advisor, introduced themselves and their intentions.
“We started a committee that we have now called the Fellowship and Scholarship Committee that’s got a goal of helping students apply for fellowships and external scholarships,” Sassi said.
Sassi explained that he and Bond have three goals for this committee.
“The first one is outreach and motivation,” he said. “Outreach, because a lot of students at NMU do not know that there are fellowships and national scholarships that they can apply for and are qualified for, and motivation as well, because a lot of them, when they find out about these, they say, ‘Oh, I can’t compete in those…’”
The second goal they informed the meeting of was to facilitate several programs such as the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
“In the Fulbright case, we had to do interviews and also recommendations, and there are several programs that have that kind of process, and so we wanted to facilitate that,” Sassi said.
The third goal is helping students with their applications.
At the end of the meeting, they requested faculty members to send students of any level their way if they are interested.
“Our requests [for] faculty [are] to send this to good students, ones that you think have that potential, and to at least go through this process,” Bond said.
Sassi also asked the faculty to send available scholarships or fellowships their way.
The next item on the agenda was approving new motions on courses and program changes. There was an approval for computer science course deletions and social work program changes.
The senate then discussed departmental highlights. This included talk about Total Head at Blackrocks Brewery and how TH440 Advanced Lighting will be a part of it. MGT 215 Entrepreneurship will also be selling jewelry.
Finally, faculty expressed interest in upcoming events at NMU, including Diwali, “Gales of November: Shipwrecks on Lake Superior” and Faculty-Led Study Abroad (FLSA) Proposal Workshops.
The meeting adjourned around 3:50 p.m.
