When Jordan Campbell walked into a team meeting, she had no idea what awaited her. The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball player received news that brought her to tears.
Campbell, who had been a walk-on since her sophomore year, was awarded a full scholarship.
“I didn’t think anything of it sitting here and listening. I’m just like, mmm, like wondering where this is going,” Campbell recalled when head coach Raina Harmon started talking about here.
Harmon knew exactly where the meeting was headed. She planned to honor Campbell for her dedication.
“When someone shows you who they are, and are willing to emphasize what that culture looks like, it’s not me first. It’s team first, of course you have to celebrate that,” said Harmon.
The announcement was met with applause as Harmon acknowledged Campbell’s commitment.
“When I heard, I really got emotional because when you don’t expect something, it hits you harder I feel like and on top of it, I was really looking forward to something like that,” said Campbell.
Harmon described the moment when Campbell realized the significance of the announcement.
“She has no idea what the back of the room looks like in that moment until she saw the video,” said Harmon.
Campbell was moved to give Harmon a hug.
“I just wanted to get up and give her a hug,” said Campbell.
Harmon added, “She didn’t have to say what that meant to her. Physically show showed it. A tight squeeze. She might’ve cracked some ribs in there but no I’m kidding.”
During her speech to the team, Campbell expressed her gratitude, saying, “Well, thank you I really appreciate it. You know I thought about leaving and transferring to another school where I can actually play. But I genuinely just love it here. I love the people the friends I made.”
“I just spoke my mind, how I felt and remind them how much I love them,” said Campbell.
Harmon concluded, “I think that’s why everybody got emotional. We weren’t talking about basketball right? It’s just the person that she is.”
