TIFTON — Two stellar students of ABAC have been recognized by the minds behind La Fiesta del Pueblo.
The committee that arranges and organizes the annual Latino and Hispanic cultural celebration recently awarded Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College students Wendy Gonzales Huerta and Oscar Martinez with the Maria Guadalupe Cervantes Memorial scholarship, aiming to support their educational pursuits and their goals after graduation.
Huerta is a full time student of ABAC dedicated to pursuing an education in writing and education, having made Dean’s List for both the spring and fall semesters of 2024. Outside of her classes, she works to support her community through a variety of channels, including serving as an ABAC Ambassador, a senator for the school of Arts and Sciences in the Student Government Association, and devoting more than 70 hours of her free time to other community service efforts.
She hopes to work in marketing and public relations after she graduates to help organizations develop stronger connections with their business collaborators and the general public and foster lasting change.
As the first person in his family to achieve and pursue college education, Martinez is just as determined to excel in his studies, crediting his family and high school teachers with making his higher education possible and driven to do right by them at ABAC.
Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education, Martinez completed an internship at the office of Congressman Austin Scott in Washington, D.C. last year as part of his studies.
He’s also served as an ABAC Ambassador, is an active member of the Collegiate Future Farmers of America, and serves as a volunteer firefighter for Tift County and on the board of the La Fiesta del Pueblo committee.
Martinez plans to open an agricultural business after he graduates.
The Maria Guadalupe Cervantes Memorial scholarship is a program established in 2004 by the La Fiesta del Pueblo committee in honor of its namesake, an educator from Mexico who passed away in 2000, and is among the programs and events the committee organizes as part of the festivities surrounding and leading up to La Fiesta del Pueblo, to be held at the end of the month.
