Luke Acquistapace, of Carey, has been named the first recipient of The John Peavey Legacy Fund Student Scholarship.
In his scholarship application, Acquistapace noted that he grew up in an agricultural family, working with his parents to raise more than 800 cows and farm more than 1,500 acres of hay.
“I am fascinated by learning about what role agriculture plays in the current economy and how I can contribute to the economy through my own agricultural business,” he wrote.
His application easily met the criteria for the scholarship, which is intended to support students from Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming or Nevada pursuing a degree or trade in agriculture. Acquistapace will study agricultural economics at the University of Idaho, where he started this fall.
The scholarship fund is named for John Peavey, a third-generation Blaine County sheep rancher and former Idaho state senator who founded the Trailing of the Sheep Festival in 1996 with his wife, Diane. Following Peavey’s death in 2024 at age 90, festival organizers established a fund in his name. The fund includes the annual scholarship and additionally supports the festival’s mission to preserve the history and culture of sheepherding in Idaho and the West.
Acquistapace accepted his $500 scholarship in person at the festival’s annual fundraising event on Aug. 7 at the Argyros Performing Arts Center.
