FORT HOOD, Texas — Children of military families received $2,000 scholarships this July courtesy of the Fisher House Foundation, the Fort Hood Media Center has announced.
According to Fort Hood, the scholarships were presented as part of the Fisher House Scholarship program during a ceremony at the Warrior Way Commissary on July 1.
Fort Hood said the Defense Commission Agency (DeCA) and the Fisher House Foundation partner to bring scholarships to children of “active-duty, reserve, retired and deceased service members.”
“We have our (representatives) and our vendors who come in and who are part of the Fisher House, and the scholarship is a way to give back to our community and our budding students who are going to be something,” said Andrea Kirby, commissary officer for Clear Creek Commissary on Fort Hood.
According to the Fisher House Foundation website, the organization gave out 500 $2,000 scholarships for the 2025-2026 school year. Applicants had to maintain certain GPA requirements as well write a 500-word essay.
Out of the 500 scholarships awarded this year, Fort Hood stated Clear Creek Commissary had four recipients and Warrior Way Commissary had six.
Incoming Texas A&M sophomore Madison Jackson was one of the recipients, Fort Hood said, writing an essay on her experience working at a summer camp for children and adults with special needs. She reportedly plans to pursue an architectural degree, which she says will take six to seven years to complete.
“Which is a lot of time and tuition,” Jackson said. “So, this scholarship definitely helps make that a lot more attainable for me, and I really, really appreciate it.”
Candace Williams, business manager for the Fort Hood Fisher House, said the Fisher House aiding the scholarships keeps the foundation participating in the military community.
“It really helps that we’re able to just partner with the community and different things like this and bring awareness for what the house has done for military members,” Williams said in a statement. “We appreciate that.”
The Fisher House Foundation said the Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to “recognize military families’ contributions to the fighting force’s readiness and to celebrate the commissary’s role in the military family community.”
Applications for next year’s scholarships will reportedly open in December.
