Five Ketchikan students have been selected to receive 2025 Sam Pitcher Music Scholarships.
The scholarship program was established following the death of 16-year-old musician Sam Pitcher. Pitcher’s passion was music, and he was a member of all Ketchikan High School bands as well as the McPherson Music bands. He also was a member of the band that he and his friends created, “The Rubber Band.” In addition, he attended the Sitka Fine Arts Camp as well as the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.
The scholarship fund is fiscally sponsored by the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council.
Seventh-grader Gabriel Osborn; and eighth-graders Julianne Marjori Montes Balitao, Kinyon Clevenger, Makayla McAlpin and Olivia Trinity Marie Paul, ,each earned the $800 award.
The awards, according to Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship information, are based on merit, goals and musicianship.
All five students plan to use their awards to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp during the summer of 2025.
Gabriel Osborn, the son of Michael Osborn, has been playing the piano for three years, according to program information. He has been playing piano with the Schoenbar Jazz Band this year, and also has started studying percussion. Osborn is focused on the goal of building a career as a pianist, and looks forward to practicing every day.
Balitao is the daughter of Maria and Jerome Balitao, and has been playing the flute for about three years.
Julianne Marjori Montes Balitao has written music that she has performed, and her goals include overcoming performance anxiety and learning different genres of music.
Kinyon Clevenger is the son of Natasha Kapralova and Kevin Clevenger. Kinyon Clevenger has been playing the trombone for more than three years, and also plays the piano. He hopes to get better at reading music as well as to learn new skills and better techniques while attending Sitka Fine Arts Camp.
Makayla McAlpin is the daughter of Nicole Adams and Sayers McAlpin. Makayla McAlpin has been playing the trombone for three years, and has enjoyed playing a few solos with the Schoenbar Jazz Band. She hopes to continue to improve her skills and knowledge of music.
Olivia Trinity Marie Paul is the daughter of Kalah Stevens. Paul has been playing the flute for about three years. She also plays the trumpet and is learning the electric bass. She now plays flute in both the Schoenbar Symphonic Band and the Schoenbar Jazz Band, and also sings in the Schoenbar Choir.
Paul is considering studying a music major while in college.
